Originally established as a special conference of the Pennsylvania Ministerium in 1812, the Joint Synod petitioned the ministerium to form an independent body in 1817, and in 1818 the first general conference of the synod was held in Somerset, Ohio. It was a booklet created by the Fremont District Literature Committee and contained an outline for each monthly missionary program. This continued to be published, by the Women's Missionary Conference until 1924.
